AI Reality Check — Issue 10

AI got a papal sermon, a corporate severance package, a Utah planning fight, a generation of booing graduates, an Apple takeover bid, and Meta put everything behind a paywall.

AI Reality Check - Issue 10

Friday 29 May 2026 | Kaye Nicholson | GrowthZone AI | growthzoneai.co.uk

Born analogue. Raised digital. 30 years of real business experience. Now explaining what AI actually means for work.

Here is what actually happened in AI this week.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

1. The Pope Published a 42,300-Word AI Manifesto

What happened: Pope Leo XIV issued Magnifica Humanitas this week. The Catholic Church's formal position on AI. Key arguments: AI must be "disarmed" - freed from monopolistic control by a handful of corporations. Warning against AI in warfare and workplaces. AI's speed weakens creativity and judgment. AI imitation of human communication makes people lose the desire for genuine human connection.

Why it matters: 1.4 billion followers. Your customers, employees, and communities are among them. The conversation about what AI should and should not do is now happening at every level of society.

Who should care: Any business using AI in customer-facing ways. Any employer thinking about how to talk about AI with their team. Anyone wanting to understand why attitudes to AI are becoming more complex, not less.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

2. Meta: Record Revenue, Mass Layoffs, Employees Training Their Replacements

What happened: Meta laid off 8,000 people and announced record revenue of $214 billion in the same week. AI budget doubled to $125-145 billion. 7,000 more staff drafted to AI teams. Leaked audio confirmed employee tracking data is feeding Meta's AI systems. Over 1,000 staff signed a petition against the programme.

Why it matters: This is not a struggling company. It is a highly profitable one reallocating toward AI. Cisco, Microsoft, and Coinbase are doing the same. The pattern is clear.

Who should care: Every business owner thinking about their team and their own role. The skills question is now urgent.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

3. 99% of CEOs Expect AI-Driven Layoffs Within Two Years

What happened: A survey this week. 99% of CEOs. Alongside graduate unemployment at a four-year high. Graduates booing AI speakers at ceremonies. Google's CEO said anxiety "rightfully growing."

Why it matters: The generational dimension is arriving. Entry-level work that started careers is being automated. The generation entering your workforce is watching this carefully.

Who should care: Every business with staff or wanting to attract staff. The skills investment question is urgent.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

4. The Stratos Project - A Data Centre Bigger Than Manhattan

What happened: One proposed AI data centre in Utah. 40,000 acres. 30.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year. 55% spike in Utah's emissions. 5 million gallons of water per day. Thousands of objections. Resistance spreading across US states.

Why it matters: AI is not clean technology. The infrastructure required has a very large physical footprint. For UK businesses with net-zero commitments, AI tools are part of your picture.

Who should care: Businesses with sustainability reporting. Businesses whose clients measure environmental criteria.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

5. Apple Is Building a Standalone Siri to Compete with ChatGPT

What happened: Leaked renders published ahead of June's developer conference show Apple is preparing a standalone Siri app for iOS 27 that competes directly with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The rebuilt Siri will use Google's Gemini technology under the hood. The app will show chat history, accept document and photo uploads alongside text, and integrate through the Dynamic Island for quick queries.

Why it matters: When Apple builds a feature into iOS and makes it as easy as swiping down, it reaches every iPhone user within months. For UK businesses, this means AI-powered assistance is about to land on every device in your team, every client's phone, every customer's pocket, with almost no barrier to use. The question is not whether your customers and staff will use AI tools. It is which ones and for what.

Who should care: Any business with a team using iPhones. Any business thinking about AI adoption barriers. And any business building for iOS or planning Apple-adjacent products.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

6. Meta Launches Paid Tiers for Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp

What happened: Meta is rolling out paid Plus subscriptions across all three platforms. Instagram Plus at $3.99 a month. Facebook Plus at $3.99. WhatsApp Plus at $2.99. Perks include detailed analytics, extended Story visibility, custom themes, and exclusive engagement features.

Why it matters: For businesses using organic reach on Meta platforms, this is a meaningful development. The features that used to sit behind paid advertising are moving toward subscription. Understanding which features matter for your business use case, and whether the paid tier makes sense, is now a decision most active social media users will face.

Who should care: Any business using Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp for marketing, customer service, or community building.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

7. Tool of the Week: WatchMyCompetitor

What happened: watchmycompetitor.com - automatically monitors competitors, regulations, and market shifts. Turns data into alerts and reports. Free trial.

Why it matters: Most businesses know they should track competitors. Most do not have time. This automates it.

Who should care: Any North East business that needs to stay current with competitors or sector regulation. Free trial available.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

This week in one sentence: AI got a papal sermon, a corporate severance package, a Utah planning fight, a generation of booing graduates, an Apple takeover bid, and Meta put everything behind a paywall.

Born analogue. Raised digital. 30 years of real business experience explaining what AI actually means for work.
