AI Reality Check - Issue 14

Friday 26 June 2026 | Kaye Nicholson | GrowthZone AI | growthzoneai.co.uk

Born analogue. Raised digital. 30 years of real business experience. Now explaining what AI actually means for work.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

1. Anthropic Accused Alibaba of the Biggest Known AI Theft in History

What happened: Anthropic accused Alibaba of carrying out the largest known AI distillation attack it has encountered, alleging that Alibaba used approximately 25,000 fraudulent accounts to generate 28.8 million interactions with its Claude models. The goal, Anthropic said, was to illegally extract its AI technology. Anthropic has urged the US government and the AI industry to work together to better protect American AI capabilities. The allegation comes as AI security and export controls have become a major policy focus, with the Fable 5 shutdown last week also linked to security concerns.

Why it matters: the two stories from this week and last connect. A Chinese tech giant allegedly ran a mass coordinated extraction campaign against American AI models while the US government issued an export control directive shutting down Anthropic's most capable models citing national security concerns. AI is now explicitly a geopolitical security battlefield, not just a technology race. For UK businesses: the stability and security of the AI tools you use is now a geopolitical question as much as a commercial one.

Who it's for: any business that uses Claude or any other major AI platform. Anyone following AI regulation and security. Anyone thinking about which platforms to build long-term workflows on.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

2. Claude Moved Into Slack This Week

What happened: Anthropic launched Claude Tag, a new feature that lets teams tag @Claude directly in Slack channels. Claude can follow a channel's ongoing work, remember what has been discussed, and if admin controls allow it, pull relevant information from elsewhere in the company. Each channel can have its own Claude with administrators deciding what it can access. Claude Tag can break tasks into steps, post updates in threads, and proactively flag forgotten work or relevant context.

Why it matters: AI is moving from standalone tools you open in a separate tab to features embedded inside the communication tools where work actually happens. Slack is where most team knowledge, decisions, and coordination lives. A Claude that follows a channel's context over time is a different kind of tool from one that responds to individual prompts. Microsoft, Snowflake, and others are all building toward the same goal. This is where enterprise AI is heading.

Who it's for: any business team that uses Slack. Any business thinking about where AI will be embedded in workflows over the next twelve months. Anyone evaluating AI tools for team productivity.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

3. Apple Is Raising Prices Because of AI

What happened: Apple raised prices on multiple MacBook and iPad models this week. The company said the AI boom has created unprecedented demand for memory chips, causing component prices to soar, and that it cannot hold prices unchanged. Apple's stock fell around 5% on the announcement. The company warned that additional price increases across other products could follow if component costs stay elevated.

Why it matters: the cost of the AI boom is now showing up directly in the price of consumer hardware. The demand for memory chips to run AI models has created a shortage that is raising prices for everyone buying electronics. For businesses: your hardware refresh cycle may cost more than your last one. For anyone thinking about AI as free or cheap: the infrastructure cost is landing somewhere, and some of it is now arriving in your hardware invoices.

Who it's for: any business planning hardware purchases. Anyone buying laptops or devices for their team this year. Anyone tracking the real costs of the AI economy.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

4. Google Is Losing Its AI Researchers at Speed

What happened: two more researchers who helped build Google's Gemini model, Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel, are leaving the company for Anthropic. This follows last week's announcement that John Jumper, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry for AlphaFold, left DeepMind for Anthropic. Separately, Noam Shazeer, one of the original authors of the Transformer architecture that underpins modern AI, left Google for OpenAI the same week. The pattern is accelerating as both Anthropic and OpenAI prepare IPO filings that give them strong equity to offer.

Why it matters: the people who built the technical foundations of modern AI are choosing to move to smaller companies rather than stay at the largest technology companies in the world. Pre-IPO equity is the pull, but so is the ability to work on frontier problems with more autonomy. For businesses tracking which AI platforms are building genuine technical capability for the long term: follow where the talent is going.

Who it's for: anyone making long-term AI platform decisions. Anyone tracking where fundamental AI research capability is consolidating.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

5. The Rest of the Week

SpaceX acquired Cursor, the leading AI coding tool, for $60 billion days after its record IPO. The company running AI compute for Anthropic and Google now owns the productivity tool too. Infrastructure meets tool layer.

Trump said Anthropic is no longer a national security threat after the G7, but the Fable 5 export control stays because Amazon triggered the original alert. Standard Claude models are entirely unaffected.

A Munich court ruled Google legally responsible for false AI Overview claims despite the "may contain errors" disclaimer. AI disclaimers do not automatically transfer legal liability. Human review is the accountability layer.

OpenAI launched a $150 million partner network to certify 300,000 consultants by year end. The hardest part of AI is getting companies to actually use it. An official UK certification path is now open, so that's exciting news. !!

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

This week in one sentence: Anthropic accused Alibaba of the biggest AI theft in history, Claude moved into Slack, Apple is raising prices because of AI memory demand, Google's top researchers are leaving, SpaceX bought the coding tool for $60 billion, and AI disclaimers failed in a German court.

Born analogue. Raised digital. 30 years of real business experience explaining what AI actually means for work.
